8 things that ruin car paint (and how to protect your vehicle)
Protect your vehicle’s paint by knowing what can cause damage and how to protect your car when it comes into contact with these hazards.

Your vehicle deserves to shine. If you’ve ever felt the frustration of spotting a scratch or a stubborn stain on your car’s exterior, you’re not alone. A few simple strategies can help protect your vehicle’s finish (and your wallet).
The key is prevention – knowing what to avoid and how to guard against paint-ruining hazards.
The Maaco team helped us line up a cheat sheet to keep your sheen in great shape. Avoid these eight culprits, and you can breathe a little easier, no matter the season or stretch of highway.
1. Bird Droppings
Truthfully, the problem isn’t the birds — it’s when we let bird droppings sit where they land. The acidic content eats away at the paint and can cause permanent etching.
You can avoid long-term damage by simply washing off bird droppings promptly with a soft cloth and gentle car cleaner.
A proactive approach is even better: Apply a quality wax or ceramic coating every three months to create a protective barrier.
2. Tree Sap
It can be tempting to park under the cool shade of trees, especially in the summer heat. However, tree sap is no friend to your vehicle’s finish. The sticky residue hardens over time and bonds to the paint, potentially causing discoloration and damage.
If you can, avoid parking under trees, specifically in the spring and summer. Trees “wake up” after winter, and sap flow increases, making it more likely to drip. Summer heat also keeps the sap more fluid, causing more frequent drips. See any pine trees? Try to stay away from them, they’re the worst offenders for sap.
Park in shaded or garage areas if you can, and if you see sap, use tree sap remover products or isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber cloth to clean it gently and safely.
Fun fact: sap is less likely to stick to well-waxed exteriors, so maintain a regular waxing schedule – but remember, you need to wait at least 60-90 days before applying wax to a newly painted car from Maaco to prevent voiding the warranty.
3. Sunlight (UV Damage)
Any vehicle can incur paint damage from prolonged exposure to UV rays. Too much sun causes fading, oxidation, and deterioration of the clear coat. (Find more tips for summer car care from Maaco here).
The good news? Even a little bit of cover can help lessen the effects. Park in shady or covered areas when possible – just remember to steer clear of those trees! Use high-quality UV-protectant wax or paint sealant.
If you must park outdoors, consider a car cover for extended periods. It can help improve the longevity and shine of your paint finish.
4. Road Salt
If you’re part of the nearly 70% of the U.S. population that lives in snowy regions, road salt can be unavoidable. The solution is to prevent buildup before it starts because salt accelerates corrosion.
Wash your car more frequently in winter, including the undercarriage. Washing blasts any buildup and keeps surfaces clear. Before winter starts, apply a rustproofing treatment to minimize any corrosive damage from road salt.
Keep in mind that every paint job from Maaco includes paint sealant to protect against rust and other destructive materials.
5. Improper Washing Techniques
A car wash should never do more harm than good. Scratches, swirl marks, and dulling can all result from using abrasive materials or dirty wash mitts.
Use a two-bucket washing method (one for soapy water, one for rinse water) and wash with microfiber mitts and soft drying cloths. They also stress that what you use is just as important as how you use it. Make sure to use pH-balanced car wash soap, not dish soap or household cleaner (both can wear away the protective coating on your paint finish).
6. Gasoline Spills
Drips happen. If you see a trickle of gasoline after a top-off, don’t let it linger. Wipe off gas spills immediately with a clean, damp cloth.
A protective layer against potential damage is also the best line of defense, so wax your vehicle regularly to get the benefits of protection. Just wait 90 days after any paint or bodywork to avoid accidentally voiding a warranty.
7. Insect Residue
No one likes to stare at bug guts. But there’s another good reason to remove those splatters immediately. Bug innards are acidic and can leave permanent marks in the clear coat of your vehicle’s paint finish if left for too long.
Clean insect splats off your car as soon as possible with a bug remover or a microfiber cloth soaked in warm, soapy water. Want to make removal even easier? Use a protective wax coating to keep any residue from sticking around.
8. Water Spots (Hard Water)
Hard water contains higher levels of calcium and magnesium — if you see white, chalky residue after washing your car (or on your appliances at home), you’re probably working with hard water. Those mineral deposits leave spots that can etch into the paint if not removed.
Even if you don’t live in a hard-water area, remember that both rain and a car wash with hard water can affect your vehicle.
Dry your car immediately after washing using a microfiber towel or a squeegee. If you can, use filtered or deionized water for cleaning too. An excellent choice is to apply a ceramic coating to reduce water spot formation.
By taking these precautions, you can keep your car’s paint in top condition and extend its lifespan (and potential resale value!). If you need a paint touch-up or some protective measures put in place, your local Maaco location is a great place to start.
